To distinguish him from John the Baptist, he is given titles such as "Apostle" and "Evangelist." He and his brother James were fishermen in Galilee, but they met Jesus and became his disciples. Along with Peter and James, he became one of the most important beloved disciples and continued to support the faith. In the scene of the Last Supper, he asked Christ, "Who is the one who will betray you?" right next to him. He is also the only one of the twelve apostles who was at the foot of the cross with the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene during the crucifixion of Christ. While the twelve apostles were martyred in tragic deaths, it is said that only John was spared martyrdom. During the persecution in Rome, John was to be martyred by being thrown into a large cauldron of boiling oil, but he miraculously survived.
