He was an attendant of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. According to the "Gikeiki," he was the son of the Kumano Betto (chief priest), and it is said that he was from Kii Province, but the details are unknown. Originally a monk of Mount Hiei, he loved martial arts, and after meeting Yoshitsune at Gojo Bridge, he served him to the end as an attendant.
