West Side Story (West Side Monogatari) is a 1961 American musical romantic drama film directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. The original work is the musical of the same name, which was performed on Broadway in 1957, based on Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. This film is a film adaptation of the musical, with the film rights acquired by film producer Walter Mirisch. It stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer. In addition, George Chakiris and Rita Moreno joined the cast, and songs sung in the film such as "Tonight," "America," "Mambo," "Cool," and "Maria" captivated many people, and the soundtrack album became a phenomenal success. At the Academy Awards, it won 10 out of 11 nominated categories, including Best Picture, and among these were Best Picture and Best Director, as well as Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress for George Chakiris and Rita Moreno, respectively. Also, Robert Wise won the Best Director award four years later for The Sound of Music.
