This is a pair of free cups made by Aoba Kiln, Hasami ware, featuring a painted oni (demon). They were a gift about twenty years ago. They are approximately 12.3cm tall, making them quite large. They are taller than a regular mug, but the capacity is about the same. As they were a gift, they have been carefully stored away in a cabinet. As they are handmade by the kiln, the texture and color will vary from piece to piece. They are made of earthenware, not porcelain, so they are thick and have a very warm texture. They also have the characteristic crazing of earthenware. Oni paintings are not often seen these days. They are perfect for this time of year.
