Chihaya Shrine is located in the main enclosure of Chihaya Castle and was originally founded as a tutelary shrine to enshrine Hachiman Daibosatsu of Chihaya Castle. Later, Masashige Kusunoki and Masatsura Kusunoki were enshrined together. The shrine buildings were rebuilt in Meiji 7 (1874), and a small shrine was built in Meiji 12 (1879), becoming Chihaya Shrine. The following three items are provided: 1. Dainanko (Chihaya Shrine) 2. Chihaya Shrine "Welcome to the Shrine" 3. Chihaya-Akasaka Village Local History Museum Pamphlet Masashige Kusunoki, in the Genko War (1331), served Emperor Go-Daigo and, in cooperation with Imperial Prince Morinaga, drew a large-scale shogunate army to Chihaya Castle during the Battle of Chihaya Castle, thereby inciting rebellions throughout Japan and contributing to the overthrow of the Kamakura shogunate. Furthermore, under the Kenmu Restoration, he was appointed to the Records Office, the highest administrative organ, and assisted the Emperor along with Takauji Ashikaga. After Takauji's rebellion in the En'gen War, he took on a role in the Southern Court's army alongside Yoshisada Nitta and Akiie Kitabatake, but was defeated by Takauji's army at the Battle of Minatogawa and committed suicide. He was one of the heroes of the Kenmu Restoration. After the Meiji era, he was called "Dainanko" (Great Kusunoki), and in Meiji 13 (1880), he was posthumously awarded the rank of Shoichii (Senior First Rank). He also became the main enshrined deity of Minatogawa Shrine.
