Since ancient times, Makomo (Zizania latifolia), also known as "the grass where gods reside," has been strongly connected to the gods and is believed to have the power to purify a space. It is said that the shimenawa (sacred straw rope) of Izumo Taisha Shrine is made of this Makomo, not rice straw. It is also said to have high detoxifying effects, and various products such as tea and powder made from Makomo are sold. The shimenawa here is made from Makomo grown in my own rice field, bathed in plenty of sunlight alongside the rice, carefully hand-harvested, and sun-dried. Two types of rice ears are added, representing red and white, along with the leaves of the Nandina plant, which symbolize warding off misfortune, and pine needles, a symbol of longevity, bundled together and tied with red and white awaji-musubi mizuhiki (decorative cords). All the materials are grown and harvested by myself. While it may not be flashy or cute, this work is made with the utmost respect for the original meaning of the shimenawa. It is an environmentally friendly product, made entirely from materials that will return to the earth, without using any wire.
