Kikuchi Hojudo began in 1604 (Keicho 9) when the first generation, Kiheiji, was appointed as the official caster to Lord Yoshiaki Mogami, the lord of Yamagata Castle. The tradition has been passed down through the generations: the first to ninth generations Kiheiji, the 10th to 12th generations Unosuke, the 13th to 14th generations Kumaji Masanao, and now the 15th generation Masanao.
