Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Tsushima Goutou Tenno Shrine, July 3, 2011 (first Sunday of July) On the Sunday before the festival, the children prepare by making paper banners, practicing wearing loincloths, cleaning the shrine grounds, erecting the banners, and building a mud mountain (sand mountain) to hold the paper banners. On the night before the festival, they hang lantern lanterns at the shrine to pay their respects and celebrate the eve of the festival by beating drums. On the day of the festival, they gather at the Horikome Community Center, wear six-foot loincloths, and go to the shrine in formation. After worshiping and circling the shrine three times, the Oyadama (6th graders) carry the large banners, the Nakadama (4th-5th graders) carry the medium banners, and the Kodama (1st-3rd graders) carry the five-colored paper banners. They split into two groups, A course and B course, and in response to the leader Oyadama's shout of "Onyasa!", the Nakadama and Kodama shout "Monyasa!" in unison as they parade through the town to ward off evil. After the children finish their town patrol and return to the shrine, they put away the banners, worship, and then jump into the purification area to perform a purification ritual. Afterwards, they return to the community center, take showers to wash off the sweat and mud, change clothes, and have a hot pot meal in the large hall.
