This opera, due to various circumstances after the composer's death, underwent significant revisions (or perhaps degradations?) repeatedly, resulting in a mixture of different versions. This can be a source of confusion for viewers, but also, in a way, a great source of enjoyment. The performance available on this disc attempts to restore the work as closely as possible to the composer's original intentions, and the differences from other performances alone make it worth watching. In particular, the Muses appearing at the beginning and end as independent characters are not only unusual but also contribute to making the entire story deeply moving. Furthermore, Olympia's brilliant performance, the understated yet elaborate stage design in the famous "Barcarolle" scene, and the elaborate acting and direction throughout make this a very enjoyable performance overall. Also, the lead role, conducted by Schikoff, has a somewhat frail appearance that, with all due respect, perfectly suits the image of Hoffmann, making it a perfect fit for the role. If I were to be picky, the orchestra's sound lacks a bit of depth, which is a minor point of dissatisfaction.
