The Four Gods (Shijin) are also known as the Four Beasts, Four Symbols, or Four Spirits, and are spiritual beasts that govern the directions. Seiryu (Azure Dragon) is in the east, Suzaku (Vermilion Bird) is in the south, Byakko (White Tiger) is in the west, and Genbu (Black Tortoise) is in the north, with Koryu (Yellow Dragon) or Kirin placed in the center.
