● Kaeru (Frog) A type of Yaotoko (thin man) mask. The Kaeru mask's features transform the Yaotoko's emaciation into something rather gruesome. It is said to be named after the appearance of a drowned person. It depicts the face of a man who became a vengeful spirit due to a merciless death, helping Moritsuna's surprise attack on Kojima in a passage from the Tale of the Heike. It is used in "Fujito" along with the Jūniyo (twelve masks). The Yaotoko mask is also used. The small, downcast eyes seen within the circular eye sockets are set quite far apart, and the two eyebrows connect at the brow, arching and covering the eyes like a visor. Furthermore, the upper eyelids protrude further than the lower eyelids, covering the eyeballs, which makes the eyes even more expressive. Of course, the area around the eyes is painted with red. The disarray of the forehead and the depiction of the eyebrows and beard are weak, emphasizing this.
