Onsen Tsugaru Kokeshi Made by Toshiyuki Kojima (1949-2012) Lineage: Tsugaru Teacher: Zenji Sato Pupils: Born in Nayoro, Hokkaido, he moved to Kuroishi, Aomori Prefecture after graduating from elementary school and attended junior high school there. Around that time, his future teacher, Zenji Sato, held a kokeshi class at the junior high school, teaching kokeshi making to students who wished to learn. Toshiyuki received guidance from this kokeshi class and, after graduating from junior high school, became a disciple of Zenji Sato, beginning his full-fledged training in woodturning. Later, Rokuchishu Aho, who was one year younger than him in the kokeshi class, also became a disciple of Zenji. He began making kokeshi around 1967 and served as the chairman of the Kokeshi Workers' Association, contributing to the development of Tsugaru kokeshi after the death of Zenji Sato. After Toshiyuki's death, his eldest daughter, Rika, succeeded him and inherited Toshiyuki's style.
