Hiyoshi Tōshō-gū is a shrine located in Sakamoto, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. It is a branch shrine of Hiyoshi Taisha. The main shrine, a designated Important Cultural Property, is said to be the origin of the Gongen-zukuri style and is also known as the "Nikko of Kansai." It is located at the eastern foot of Mount Hiei. It is one of the Tōshō-gū shrines that enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was built before the Nikko Tōshō-gū in the early Edo period. The shrine buildings have a Haiden (worship hall) in the front and a Honden (main hall) in the rear, connected by a stone corridor, a structure called "Gongen-zukuri." Both are completely lacquered in black and feature vibrant colors, and the carvings and decorations are also extremely gorgeous. The following three items are provided: 1. Goshuin (shrine stamp) 2. Yuisyo-sho (historical document) 3. Hiyoshi Taisha It was founded in 1623 (Genna 9) by Tenkai as a model for the Tōshō-gū. The current shrine buildings were rebuilt in 1634 (Kan'ei 11). The renovation of the Nikko Tōshō-gū shrine buildings (the Great Renovation of Kan'ei) also began in the autumn of this year. Since its founding, it was a branch temple of Enryaku-ji Temple, but due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in 1867 (Meiji 9), it became a branch shrine of Hiyoshi Taisha.
