Description Master Josho Yagyu was a Buddhist monk who served as the chief priest of Hotoku Zen Temple, a temple of the Rinzai sect of the Daitoku-ji school, located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. Brief History: 1962 (Showa 37): Graduated from Hanazono University. In the same year, he entered the Daitoku-ji Zen Training Hall and became a disciple of Master Sesso Oda (489th head of Daitoku-ji Temple). 1965 (Showa 40): Returned to Hotoku Zen Temple. 1972 (Showa 47): Became the chief priest of Hotoku Zen Temple. Received the Buddhist names "Kendo" and "Josho" from the previous chief priest of Sangen-in Temple, Master Kaido Fujii. Hotoku Zen Temple was founded in 1638 (Kanei 15) by Tajima-no-kami Munenori Yagyu to commemorate his late father, Sekishusai Muneyoshi. The founding priest was Zen Master Takuan, who was acquainted with Munenori. Since then, it has served as the family temple of the Yagyu clan.
