This is a prayer bead made of Japanese cypress (hinoki). It has been stored without being used. Hinoki products are rare, so I think this is unusual. This commemorative item was created using the hinoki pillar material that supported the roof tiles of the rebuilt old Sanmon gate. It was rebuilt with donations as part of the post-war reconstruction project after being destroyed in the Kawasaki air raid. It has been remade into prayer beads and given new life.
