Gotan-ji Temple is a Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple located in Shōda-chō, Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, with Shaka Nyorai as its principal image. Gotan-ji Temple is also known as the "Cat Temple," and it protects and cares for dozens of abandoned and injured cats. In addition to regular worship, approximately 30,000 people visit the temple annually seeking the healing power of cats. They also accept photography and viewing tours of the cats. Only goshuin (temple seals) are offered. There was no explanation of the temple's history. Starting with the rescue of four abandoned cats shortly after the temple was built, they cared for a maximum of about 80 cats, and as of 2022, they are caring for 16 cats. They give all the cats names and collars, find foster homes for them, and perform neutering to prevent unwanted breeding.
