Ninigi-no-Mikoto, sent by Amaterasu Omikami, descended to earth and fell in love at first sight with Konohanasakuya-hime. In the 40th year of Emperor Keiko (110 AD), when Yamato Takeru no Mikoto was on his eastern expedition, he stopped at "Otsuka Hill" on his way from Sakamoto (Sagami Province) in Ashigara to Sakiori Palace (Kai Province). From there, he looked up to the spirit of Mt. Fuji and said, "Mt. Fuji, with its beautiful, spreading foothills to the north, should be worshipped from this place." Following this, a torii gate was built on Otsuka Hill, and in the 50th year of Emperor Keiko, a shrine was built to enshrine Asama Okami and Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, which became the founding of this shrine. In the first year of Ten'o (781), Mt. Fuji erupted, and Kii Toyoni no Ason, the lord of Kai Province, performed divination. In the 7th year of Enryaku (788), a shrine was built to the north of Otsuka Hill. This is the current location of the main shrine, where Asama Okami was enshrined, and Yamato Takeru no Mikoto was enshrined on Otsuka Hill. In ancient times, high and beautiful mountains like Mt. Fuji were considered the abodes of the gods, and it was forbidden for people to enter. Therefore, this place was a site for worshipping and performing rituals from afar to the sacred Mt. Fuji. The giant trees surrounding the main hall today tell the story of that sacred area.
