RUSSELL ATHLETIC was founded in 1902 in Alexander City, Alabama, by Benjamin Russell as the "Russell Manufacturing Company." In the early 1920s, they created the prototype of the world's first sweatshirt, and in 1938, they developed the world's first rubber print. (The prototype of the current American rubber print) After that, they used that technology to popularize sweatshirts with the names and logos of schools in school and college uniforms across the United States, and in school bookstores. In the 1980s and 90s, they signed supplier contracts with American professional sports (NFL, MLB), and along with the R mark (Eagle R) logo shaped like the American national bird, the "American Eagle," they are a top manufacturer of sportswear and activewear known to all Americans.
