I only used it indoors, so I haven't taken it outside or stepped on it with shoes. No pets, non-smoking, so there are no particular odors. Also, as I think is the specification, it is designed to be stepped on, so it won't switch unless you press firmly on the center of the pedal. There's no problem at all when stepping on it, but when pressing it with your finger, you need to get a little used to the position and strength of the press.
