This is a program for the Japan tour of Pina Bausch's "The Rite of Spring" and "PHILIPS 836 887 DSY," and Germaine Acogny's "Hommage to the Ancestors." Pina Bausch (1940-2009), a giant of dance theater who blurred the boundaries between dance and theater, is known for her legendary masterpiece "The Rite of Spring" (music: Igor Stravinsky). This work vividly depicts a woman who continues to dance as she is chosen as a sacrifice to pray for fertility, and is known as one of Bausch's greatest works. For this performance, 35 elite dancers from 13 African countries, selected for the production, breathed new life into the work, keeping the original choreography and direction intact. Furthermore, this performance also featured the valuable solo piece "PHILIPS 836 887 DSY," which Bausch created and danced in the early days of her career as a choreographer. Also performed was "Hommage to the Ancestors," choreographed and performed by Germaine Acogny, the "mother of African contemporary dance," who had a close relationship with Bausch. Both of these works were performed in Japan for the first time.
