This is a formal fukuro obi (袋帯) with beautiful gold and silver threads from Omojiyashohei (Daisho Yasaka), a long-established Nishijin textile house. Omojiyashohei has been in business for over 300 years since the Genroku era, and is one of the oldest weaving houses in Nishijin (the third oldest existing weaver). They do not mass-produce, so the quantity produced is limited, and products are supplied only to a select few specialty wholesalers. They are a "hidden gem" known only to those in the know. They rarely appear in the used market. This item would cost over 600,000 yen if newly made. (I have included a reference to the Nishijin old-established comprehensive page from "Kimono Salon" at the end.) This obi from Omojiyashohei features a black-brown ground woven with silver threads, and geometric patterns of diamonds and lattices woven with gold, silver, and pink gold threads. As is typical of Omojiyashohei, who excels in mole weave, the textured and three-dimensional parts are even more gorgeous. When the kimono itself has many patterns or when it is difficult to match the season, an obi that is formal but simple and not too assertive is very useful. For example, it would be perfect for a Christmas party where you want to wear something other than a classic Japanese pattern.
