It's a vengeful spirit mask that expresses the terrifying expression of a woman who has become something other than human due to jealousy and hatred. The inscription "Mayuki" is written on the back. The Hannya mask is arguably the most famous Noh mask, but there are actually three types: white Hannya, black Hannya, and red Hannya, each used in different plays. This red Hannya is used in the play "Dojoji," based on the legend of Anchin and Kiyohime. It looks like an ogre woman, but appears as a giant snake within the play. "Dojoji," which features highlights such as the bell-falling scene and quick costume changes, is a must-see performance and is also known as a gateway for Noh performers. You can watch it on YouTube, so please take a look if you're interested. Of the Hannya masks I've seen, I believe this one expresses the strongest expression of anger. Usually, the upper half of a Hannya mask represents anger and hatred, while the lower half represents sadness and lamentation, but this red Hannya just looks angry. It's a remarkably well-made Hannya mask. I purchased it a few years ago for around 40,000 yen, but I'm offering it at a slightly lower price.
