It might come off with polishing, but I'm afraid of scratching it, so I haven't tried. There are some fraying and scuffs on the loops, but the leather itself is durable and has no noticeable scratches. I purchased this new at a GUCCI authorized retailer, either Sogo Yokohama or Takashimaya. As shown in the photos, it has enough capacity to hold a 500ml plastic bottle with room to spare.
