Hokutolite is a lead-containing barium sulfate (lead-containing barite) that is found only in the Beitou Hot Spring in Taiwan and the Tamagawa Hot Spring in Akita Prefecture, Japan, and is thought to be formed by the sedimentation of the hot spring source. In 1898, geologist Kousaburo Sakurai discovered it at Tamagawa Hot Spring in Akita, and in 1907, Yohachiro Okamoto discovered a similar stone at Beitou Hot Spring in Taiwan, and it was named Hokutolite. Tamagawa Hot Spring is said to have been discovered by local Matagi hunters in the old days. It was called "Deer's Hot Spring" because deer were healing their wounds in the hot spring, and its name quickly became known for its high efficacy when it was opened as a therapeutic bath (※Shiguro Hot Spring at the time of the discovery of Hokutolite, later becoming Tamagawa Hot Spring). The spring quality is a radium hot spring that has radioactivity, and Hokutolite also has a small amount of radiation and is said to emit radium emanation (radon). This radon is said to have the effect of activating cells, and Hokutolite is called a "medicinal stone." Hokutolite was designated as a natural cultural landscape in Taiwan in 2000, and as a natural monument in Japan in 1922, and as a special cultural property in 1952.
