◆ What is Maitreya Bodhisattva? Maitreya is a bodhisattva who is promised to become the next Buddha after Gautama Siddhartha (Shakyamuni Buddha, the present Buddha). It is said that Maitreya will appear in the future, 5.67 billion years after Gautama Siddhartha's death, and save many people. This number is said to be almost equal to the lifespan of the solar system. The founder of the Tendai sect, Dengyo Daishi, lit the dharma lamp on Mount Hiei also to pray for the birth of Maitreya Bodhisattva. Also, the dharma lamp teaches us that even though times change, people will continue to light the light of life over many generations. The dharma lamp has only been lit for 1200 years.
