Summer 1959: Received a guitar from his father, Al, and began band activities in earnest. 1961: Enlisted in the Army. Assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, Parachute Regiment. Met Billy Cox, who would later work with him. 1963-65: Worked as a recording and tour member for artists such as The Isley Brothers, Sam Cooke, Little Richard, and Curtis Knight.
