U.S. Military Surplus Coffee cup used in U.S. military hospitals and other medical facilities. Shenango China, founded in 1901, manufactured and sold tableware for hotels, restaurants, diners, and other general use, but was also known as a supplier of military tableware. It was acquired several times and went out of business in the late 1980s. The handle attachment and finishing appear to involve handmade processes. A hand-painted wine-red line is added to the handle. This is a very rare piece. The Caduceus, the medical symbol, is also an old-style stamp. The other mugs on sale have almost straight sides as the years go by, but this one is called a flare bottom shape, and has a slight shape in the center of the cup. It seems that the machine-molded items were shaped by hand, which was time-consuming, so it was only supplied by some manufacturers for a short period of time.
