At Saga Prefectural Imari High School, he joined the art club at the recommendation of his grandfather, the 12th Kakiemon. He studied Japanese painting at Tama Art University to acquire the basics of painting and, after graduating, returned home and became a disciple of his father. He underwent training and learned techniques such as "Nigoshide" (milky white glaze) that his father and grandfather (the previous generation) had revived. In 1971, under his original name, Masashi Sakaida, he became a member of the Japan Kogei Association, and for the next ten years, he exhibited in public exhibitions and solo exhibitions under his real name. In 1982, he succeeded his father and became the 14th Kakiemon. The following year, he made his first overseas exhibition at "Close-Up of Japan in San Francisco" in the United States and was awarded honorary citizenship by the Mayor of San Francisco. The "14th Kakiemon Exhibition" received high praise both domestically and internationally. In 2001, he was designated as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property "Iroe Jiki" (Colored Porcelain) (Living National Treasure).
