Yayoi Kusama stood on the world stage as a representative Japanese artist at the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993, and her active involvement in printmaking before and after that event was a major driving force behind her current recognition. Yayoi Kusama first presented her print works in 1979. In contrast to her works after returning from the United States, which dealt with themes of death and suffering, these prints feature vibrant motifs and rich colors. In addition to her previous abstract expressions, everyday motifs such as pumpkins, dresses, grapes, flowers, and butterflies are composed of nets and polka dots, and are adorned with clear colors. It is no exaggeration to say that Kusama, whose creative activities were rooted in the proliferation of nets and polka dots, and printmaking, which is a form of reproductive art, were destined to meet. In recent years, she has released distinctive works, such as a series of woodblock prints of Mount Fuji using the techniques of ukiyo-e, and the monochrome large-scale silkscreen series "Love is Forever." This exhibition features a selection of works from the 340 print works owned by the Matsumoto City Museum of Art in Nagano Prefecture, Kusama's hometown, which boasts one of the world's largest Kusama collections, along with works from the artist's own collection, allowing visitors to experience the charm and trajectory of Yayoi Kusama's print art.
