Alphonse Maria Mucha was a Czech graphic designer, illustrator, and painter who was active in France and other countries. The name "Mucha" is based on the French pronunciation, while the Czech pronunciation, when translated into Japanese, is "Muha." He is a representative artist of Art Nouveau and produced many posters, decorative panels, calendars, and the like. He was born in Ivančice, in what is now the Czech Republic. After training in Vienna and Munich, he achieved success in Paris by drawing numerous flamboyant posters, including those for the actress Sarah Bernhardt.
