The most approachable of Beethoven's symphonies is the "Pastoral Symphony." A masterpiece by a great composer who loved nature, featuring birdsong, the babbling of a stream, and scenes of a storm. The performance by Harnoncourt & the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, which won the 1992 Gramophone Award, has the sensitivity of old instruments and a transparent sound, bringing out all the charm of this varied masterpiece.
