Different Source Material Phrase Number: 00378 ■ About Hachijoin Takakura ¯ Born and died: Unknown (c. 1176 (around An'gen 2) – after 1248 (Hoji 2) and before 1251 (Kencho 3)) was a female poet of the early Kamakura period. She was one of the New Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals and the Thirty-Six Female Poetic Immortals. She was a descendant of Fujiwara no Sadatsugu of the Southern House of the Fujiwara clan, and the granddaughter of Fujiwara no Michinori (Shinzei) and daughter of Ajari Hoin Choken. ¯ Regarding her birth, like her elder brother Kaikei, she was born through a secret affair between Choken and Princess Takamatsu (Imperial Princess Shoshi), the Chugu (Empress) of Emperor Nijo. The sudden death of Princess Takamatsu in 1176 (An'gen 2) may have been related to Takakura's birth. She was placed under the care of Fujiwara no Toshinari and served Hachijoin (Imperial Princess Shoshi), the elder sister of Princess Takamatsu, and was active in the Gotoba-in poetry circle. After the death of Hachijoin (1211), she entered the priesthood and entered Hokke-ji Temple in Nara, taking the name Kunyo.
