This is a genuine Oshima Tsumugi kimono with yokoso (horizontal weave). The pattern is woven with only red and green yokoso threads on an indigo background, and is called yokoso (yoko-kasuri). (Photos 15 and 16) The kasuri of yokoso appears as small horizontal lines, and the patterns are created using only these lines, allowing for a high degree of design freedom, resulting in a variety of patterns. There was a trend for single-dye kimonos with horizontal gradation, but this weaving pattern is similar to such gradation, expressing a highly flexible pattern, such as the red sunset clouds in the indigo color. Yokoso kimonos are also a fine example of genuine Oshima Tsumugi. The lining is white habutae, and the hakkei (lining of the lower part of the kimono) uses both-komo red-purple for tsumugi. (Photos 6-13) Perhaps the fabric was not properly prepared, and the fabric seems a little stiff. Therefore, there are fine wrinkles on the back of the knees.
