Fusetsu Nakamura (August 19, 1866 (Keio 2, July 10) – June 6, 1943 (Showa 18)) A Japanese Western-style painter, calligrapher, and book designer. A representative cultural figure of the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, his real name was Sakutaro Nakamura. He was awarded the rank of Shogoi and the Order of the Fourth Class. He was the principal of the Taiheiyo Art School. Born in Kyobashi Hatchobori, Tokyo (present-day Minato, Chuo-ku), he moved to his father's hometown of Takato, Nagano Prefecture, in his childhood. ◆ His Career as a Western-style Painter From the age of 19, he began to study Chinese classics, Nanga (Southern painting), calligraphy, and Western-style painting in earnest. In 1887, he went to Tokyo and studied under Shotaro Koyama at the art school "Fudosha." After his activities in the Meiji Fine Arts Society, he went to France in 1901 and studied under Raphaël Collin and at the Académie Julian. After returning to Japan, he exhibited many historical paintings and realistic works at the Taiheiyo Painting Society. He received high praise at the Paris Exposition and other events. ◆ His Activities as a Calligrapher and Book Designer From 1894, he interacted with Shiki Masaoka and was in charge of illustrations and titles for the Japan Newspaper and Shokoku. Around this time, he began to use the pseudonym "Fusetsu." He created numerous book illustrations and designs for literary giants such as Natsume Soseki's "I Am a Cat," Mori Ogai, Toson Shimazaki, and Sachio Ito. When Ogai Mori died in 1922, Fusetsu wrote the epitaph for the tombstone of "**Mori Rintaro's Grave**" according to his will ("The grave shall be Mori Rintaro's grave, and nothing else shall be written. The calligraphy shall be entrusted to Fusetsu Nakamura...").
