It was worn with the olive drab side out for regular field use, providing camouflage, while the snow white side was worn in snowy mountain areas. Being reversible, the fabric is made of two layers throughout, and the coat is a luxurious one, using a generous amount of fabric due to its long length and hood. When the front placket with the hood is closed all the way up, it covers half the face, designed for wind and cold protection. The olive side has slash pockets on both sides that also serve as hand warmers, as well as large patch pockets with flaps. The white side, which is not often worn, is plain. A belt is attached at the waist to enhance the fit, and the snap buttons at the bottom of the hem can be closed in front and back under the crotch to prevent wind from entering and increase heat retention. The M-42 parka, which established the basic form of hooded overcoats, was later succeeded by the M-47 parka.
