It is said that Hiraizumi's Fujiwara clan commissioned artisans from Kyoto to create Shu-urushi ware, and it has been passed down for over 800 years. This is a three-tiered Shu-urushi ware jubako (tiered food container). It is a large size, 7 sun (approximately 21 cm) long and 6.5 sun (approximately 19.8 cm) wide. It is a product of "Kimizuka," a long-established Shu-urushi ware maker. It seems that it is no longer made. It comes with a special box. Natural wood is used for the base, and it is coated with black lacquer. The underside of the lid and the inside of the jubako are coated with a calm vermilion lacquer. The sides of the jubako and the top of the lid are decorated with cloud patterns, which are representative of Shu-urushi ware, and diamond-shaped gold leaf is applied on top. The lovely small chrysanthemums on the lid and sides are charming. It is a lacquer painting with a raised design. The luster of the lacquer and the brilliance of the gold leaf are wonderful. It is very popular on special occasions such as New Year's and other celebrations. It also looks great as a craft item for display. It is an unused item, in its box and wrapped in paper. The condition of the jubako and the luster of the lacquer are like new. The white areas are reflections of light. The actual item has a beautiful luster.
