Special Historic Site: Kitora Tumulus The Kitora Tumulus is a small circular tomb located in the burial ground of ancient imperial family members and nobles, south of Fujiwara-kyo, and is thought to have been built around the late 7th to early 8th centuries. In the center of the mound is a stone chamber built with 18 cut stones of tuff. In a survey conducted in 1983, vividly colored murals were discovered inside the stone chamber, confirming that it was the second mural tomb in Japan, following the Takamatsu-zuka Tumulus. The tumulus was designated as a special historic site in 2000.
