Yamanaka-nuri is lacquerware made in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, also known as Yamanaka Shikki. As one of the three major lacquerware production areas in the prefecture, it is "Yamanaka for wood base" alongside "Wajima for coating" and "Kanazawa for maki-e." Yamanaka has long been home to many woodworkers (kijishi)*, and boasts the largest production volume in the country for turned wood (hikimono) wood bases*. A major feature of Yamanaka-nuri, which makes the most of the wood grain and expresses a natural texture, is the vertical wood cutting (tatekidori), which shapes the vessel in the direction the wood grows. This results in sturdy lacquerware that is less prone to warping due to drying, allowing for elaborate finishes not only for bowls but also for thin-turned items and lidded objects. Furthermore, the addition of decorative turning (kashoku hiki)*, which applies various patterns to the wood base, such as chisuji and arasuji, has created Yamanaka-nuri's unique lacquerware with meticulous attention to detail.
