[Persimmon Tannin Dyeing] Persimmon tannin is a natural dye made by squeezing unripe persimmons and fermenting and aging them. The history of persimmon tannin dyeing is long, a traditional dyeing technique passed down from the excellent predecessors of the Heian period. From the "persimmon clothing" worn by samurai and mountain priests of the Heian period, it has been used in everything from fishing nets, oiled umbrellas, and wood coatings because of its "high fastness (the degree to which color fades or transfers due to washing or friction) and little worry of color transfer or fading," and "insect repellent, deodorizing, and waterproof effects."
