In the turbulent times of the late Edo period, the film depicts the tumultuous life of Kanichiro Yoshimura (Kiichi Nakai), a native of the Morioka-Nanbu clan who joined the Shinsengumi, along with his heartbreaking family love. Director Takita, a craftsman of entertainment, skillfully balances dramatic developments with spectacular scenes, including sword fights. The climax, featuring the protagonist's long monologue, is a brilliant performance by Kiichi Nakai, leaving no one untouched. The cast, including Koichi Sato as his rival Hajime Saito, gives excellent performances. Personally, I was deeply moved by Tatsuo Yamada's chivalry. It won the Japan Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor (Nakai), and Best Supporting Actor (Sato).
