Kikuchi Hojudo began in 1604 (Keicho 9) when the first Kiheiji of the family was appointed as a cast iron artisan for Lord Yoshiaki Mogami, the lord of Yamagata Castle. The tradition has been passed down through generations: the first to ninth generations Kiheiji, the 10th to 12th generations Unosuke, the 13th to 14th generations Kumaji Masanao, and now the 15th generation Masanao. They have received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the US World Exposition (1926), the highest award at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition twice, and the Japan Arts and Culture Foundation Award. Furthermore, the production techniques of Wazuku (Japanese cast iron) kettles, made using traditional Japanese iron materials and iron sand, have been revived in collaboration with the Nagano family (currently the second generation Tetsushi Nagano), and they continue to staunchly preserve those techniques.
