Originally, on May 5th, the season of irises, the imperial court held martial arts competitions and rituals to ward off illness and disasters. In the age of the samurai, the association of irises (shobu) with valuing martial spirit (shobu) led to the display of armor, helmets, and swords, becoming a ceremony to pray for success in battle and career advancement. This practice spread to the common people during the Edo period and has been passed down to the present day.
