The ryūteki is a transverse flute used in gagaku (Japanese court music) performances of Tōgaku (music of Tang China). The ryūteki embellishes and colors the melody played by the hichiriki (a double-reed wind instrument), and can be said to play a decorative role. It is approximately 40 cm in length. In addition to the mouthpiece, it has seven finger holes.
