New shoulder straps are still stiff and seem to hurt the shoulders. They also seem to reduce the weight a little, and my child no longer dislikes the backpack. My child's school doesn't allow keychains, so these are also good for marking their own backpack. (This is a public elementary school. I also received permission to use the shoulder pads.) A cushioning mat, as shown in the fifth photo, is inserted between the 100% cotton fabric and the quilted fabric. Photos 6 and 7 are examples of use.
