I purchased this in September 1999 and used it for about 5 years. I recently powered it on and played a video recorded back then to check its functionality. I was a bit surprised at how clear the picture was, even better than I expected. The fast forward and rewind functions are fast and comfortable, just as advertised. The remote control and the unit itself are in good working order, but some of the styrofoam packing material has stuck to the top panel and won't come off even with rubbing. The remote control has some discoloration, likely due to sun exposure. I am a non-smoker, so there is no nicotine smell. I set it up as a TV universal remote and was able to control the volume and power of a Sharp TV without any problems. If you've been hesitant to buy one, why not take this opportunity?
