Zao Gongen is the principal image of Shugendo, a uniquely Japanese mountain asceticism. The formal name is Kongo Zao Gongen, or Kongo Zao Bosatsu. This is a uniquely Japanese Buddhist figure with no origin in India, and is known as the principal image of the main hall (Zao-do) of Kinpusen-ji Temple in Yoshino-cho, Nara Prefecture. "Kongo Zao" embodies the ultimate and eternal truth, and means "the king who governs all things." "Gongen" means "a god or Buddha who has appeared in a temporary form."
