This is a talisman received during a New Year's visit to Suwa Shrine in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. The phrase "Year of the Fire Horse: Great Good Fortune" (丙午歳大大吉) is a humorous expression that plays on the superstition surrounding the Year of the Fire Horse, claiming that it is actually a very auspicious year. This is a "hitogata" (human-shaped paper) used in the Great Purification (Ōharai) ceremony. By writing your name and age on the paper in the shape of a person and breathing on it, you transfer your impurities (kegare) to it, using it as a substitute.
