Depending on the lighting, it can look shiny, or you can see fine scratches. The photos were taken indoors, but when held up to sunlight, the scratches on the holder become visible. In terms of cleaning, I don't want to damage the material or over-handle something that goes in the mouth, so I've only wiped it down with a 30% alcohol solution. It's been used about 20 times.
