A man whose appearance suggests he is from a prison walks along an Oklahoma highway. It's Tom Joad. He asks a driver to give him a ride in a truck. The driver indirectly probes Tom's identity. "I was in prison, for killing a man," Tom says, leaving the truck. The Joad family had lived on this land for generations, but due to a severe sandstorm, they had no harvest and were taken over by a land company. At Uncle John's house, Tom embraces his mother for the first time in four years. The Joad family loaded their belongings onto a used truck and set off for California. The truck continued to run west on Route 66 under the scorching sun. They passed Checotah, Oklahoma City, and Bethany. One evening, the grandfather fell into eternal sleep. Because they couldn't afford a funeral, family members buried him. They entered California, and the grandmother also died. They arrived at the Hooverville migrant camp. The next day, a dispute arose between a labor broker who was skimming wages and the workers...
