At the age of 10, he won the junior division of the Wieniawski International Violin Competition in Poland. In 1988, at the age of 13, he made his first visit to Japan, accompanied by conductor Valery Gergiev. In 1990, he won the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition and began his international career at the age of 16. In 1995, the CD of Prokofiev and Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 (both) with Rostropovich conducting the London S.O. won numerous awards, including the Gramophone Award for Record of the Year and the Concerto Award.
